Vuma Hills Tented camp is perched above the trees stretching over the seemingly endless wilderness south west of Mikumi National Park.

'Vuma' translated from Kiswahili means "a good rumour that is spread with the blowing wind". Now a reality rather than just a rumour, it is the ideal place to evoke the true spirit of Africa.

Mikumi was gazetted as a National Park in 1964 and is named after the spindle shaped Borassus palm trees. The Mkata plain supports vast herds of plains game such as wildebeest, impala, zebra and giraffe, hunted by their associated predators; while you are more likely to find Lichtenstein's hartebeest, greater kudu, roan and sable antelope in the surrounding less fertile hills. Although game sightings can never be guaranteed, there are lots of sightings of the African 'wild dog' hunting the plains in packs.

Set at the top of a hillside in thick woodlands some 15 minutes drive from the park gate, Vuma Hill Tented Camp is a haven of tranquillity after a day’s safari.

Mikumi can be accessed by road or air or by the private luxury train, the Safari Express. By road from Dar es Salaam takes approximately 4 hours and is on tarmac all the way. Scheduled flights are available from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar, continuing onto Ruaha National Park. From Ruaha there are also scheduled flights onto Arusha and the Northern Parks and also Katavi and Mahale to the west.

The Danish manager is charming, the food is good and the pleasant swimming pool clear and inviting. There are a total of 16 tented platform rooms, that are spacious and stylishly decorated with large bathrooms. The terrace raised above the forest gives beautiful views over the Mkata floodplain below. This is an excellent spot also for children and is much favoured by resident ex-pats visiting from Dar es Salaam.

Complete with shaded wooden veranda at the front and en suite bathroom facilities at the back, there is not much to be asked for, the tents have en-suite facilities and shady verandahs.
