Arusha is one of the larger urban areas in Tanzania, beautifully situated on the outer slopes of Mt Meru, circa 100 km south of the border with Kenya. Due to its central location and its infrastructure, Arusha forms your natural starting point for a safari to the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara or Tarangire.

It is also a good starting place for climbing Mt Kilimanjaro [5895m] or Mt Meru [4560m]. The Arusha National Park is a small but very nice National Park that is situated very close to the Arusha town area. Arusha has an interesting history as regional center for many peace initiatives (it welcomed both former Presidents Clinton and Mandela in recent years) and hosts the UN international criminal tribunal for Rwanda.

Arusha has a mild climate during most of the year, with average temperatures from 20 – 28 degrees Celsius. During the rain season in April and May one can expect a regular tropical shower, although it is rare to have showers all day long, or for multiple days in a row. In June and July it can be chilly at night.

Kigongoni Lodge is located 15 minutes driving from the centre of Arusha on the way to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Situated on the hilltop of an old coffee farm, away from the town noise in a tranquil, green setting, it has splendid views on Mt Meru and – on a clear day – Mt Kilimanjaro.

By road, Arusha is circa 1.5 hour driving from the Kenyan border and circa 8 hours driving from Dar es Salaam. Arusha has two airports: Kilimanjaro International Airport for international flights and Arusha Airport for domestic flights. Kigongoni is only a 35 minutes drive from the Kilimanjaro airport, allowing international visitors arriving late at the airport to see their well-deserved rest soon after arrival. We can arrange transfers to/from each of these airports.

Or start the day with an e arly morning coffee and/or tea at your private veranda. Staying with us at Kigongoni will give you an authentic, homely experience and true sense of Tanzania, while providing an opportunity to participate in activities that contribute to the development of local communities.

Kigongoni Lodge offers nature walks, guided by knowledgeable local guides, through its own 70 acres premises and beyond. Canoeing can be arranged upon request, as well as forest lunches or breakfast. Just back from a dusty safari, a refreshing dive in the swimming pool is a must.

For those who wish to learn more about daily African life, visits to the neighboring village can be arranged. Our guides and the staff of Sibusiso Foundation (see below) are happy to show you around the center for mentally disabled children. We also arrange visits to Arusha National Park, the Arusha central market, the UN international criminal tribunal for Rwanda and the local snake park.
