Klein’s Camp is situated deep in the heart of the game-rich northern Serengeti in Tanzania – right off the beaten tourist track. Its 10 000-hectare (24 800-acre) private wildlife concession – leased from our Maasai landlords – is allotted for the exclusive use of the camp’s 20 guests, offering you the ultimate personal Tanzanian safari.

With Kenya’s Masai Mara National Park to the north and the Serengeti to the west, Klein’s is one of the most strategically positioned wildlife sanctuaries in the world. The camp is set on the edge of the Kuka Hills, commanding breathtaking views of the valley through which hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra migrate, in addition to excellent year-round game viewing. Action-packed night game-drives and extensive bush walks into the Serengeti are unique in Tanzania and an absolute highlight.

One downside with Migration Camp is that it is a long walk from your tent to the dining and reception area including a steep set of stairs (around 45 steps up the stairs). Accordingly, for those seeking more ‘accessible’ accommodations while still aiming for luxury, we recommend Kleins Camp as a luxury alternative to Migration Camp.

Kleins Camp is one of the few lodges in Northern Tanzania where night game drives are allowed. This is due to the fact that Kleins Camp resides just outside of the Serengeti in a private game sanctuary/concession. Within the Serengeti National Park, you may only game drive from 6AM to 7PM. While the night drives are not entirely nocturnal (taking place between roughly 4PM and 8PM), some people really enjoy them as leopards are frequently spotted just after sunset.

  • Exclusive private wildlife concession
  • Just 10 cottages with spectacular views
  • Bordering the game-rich Serengeti National Park
  • Thrilling day and night game-drives
  • Extensive three-hour bush walks
  • In the path of the Great Migration
  • Commitment to conservation

Grumeti River Camp is located in the western corridor of the Serengeti. Situated at the westerly end of the corridor, the lodge is roughly 30 miles east of Lake Victoria.

The lodge lies just north of the Grumeti River, which runs almost the entire length of the corridor. Few visitors ever make it out to the western corridor and most are content just to game drive and lodge in the central Serengeti. A rewarding experience awaits those willing to explore the remote western corridor, especially if the migration is pouring through from late May to mid July.

Kleins Camp sits on the edge of the Kuka Hills in the northern Serengeti just outside the official eastern boundary of the park. The lodge resides in a private sanctuary overlooking wooded hillsides and rolling grasslands. Being located just outside the Serengeti, walking safaris and night drives are permitted. Game driving can be done in the private sanctuary or in the nearby Serengeti.

There are international scheduled flights from Europe and South Africa to Nairobi and Kilimanjaro International Airports. There are daily scheduled flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport via Kilimanjaro to Klein’s airstrip, followed by a 45-minute game drive to camp. If you arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will spend one overnight in Arusha, departing early the next morning on a scheduled flight to Klein’s airstrip. We can pre-book and package all of your regional/internal flights and transfers, and provide a meet and greet service at all airports.

Kleins Camp offers fine luxury accommodations in a remote private concession of the Northern Serengeti. With just 10 cottages, Kleins Camp does provide for a very intimate and more secluded safari experience. However, with the newly refurbished and luxurious Migration Camp now open just 16.2 miles to the west, it’s difficult to recommend Kleins Camp as the luxury choice for accommodations in the Northern Serengeti. To some, Migration Camp (re-opened September 2004) offers superior accommodations and is located in a little better position for wildlife viewing. Kleins Camp was certainly the luxury choice during the last 15 or so years but with recent upgrades to Migration Camp, it seems to be a better alternative. Kleins Camp is still more expensive than Migration Camp, but it is difficult to call it more luxurious. However, for some individuals Kleins Camp may still be the best choice for luxury accommodations in the Northern Serengeti. Two important points are noted below as to why you might want to consider Kleins Camp over Migration Camp:

Intimate safari cottages: Set on the edge of the Kuka Hills, Klein’s Camp is world-renowned for its classic safari accommodation in an exclusive private wildlife concession.
• Just 10 spacious cottages
• En suite bathrooms (with shower and w.c.)
• Private verandas with spectacular views
• Elegant guest areas with breathtaking views
• Sparkling swimming pool
• African crafts shop
Each cottage features rich wooden floors and serene, classic interiors. From the private verandas and spacious guest areas, a diversity of resident wildlife, including huge elephant herds, can be viewed in the valley below. The camp has a large, beautifully furnished bar/sitting area, swimming pool and African crafts shop featuring locally made Maasai crafts. Fresh vegetables picked from the camp’s shamba – an organic African garden – accompany wholesome Pan-African meals. Dinners are served in the main dining area, which is graced by a large open fireplace, or enjoyed in a spectacular clearing in the African bush.

Exceptional year-round African wildlife: Klein’s Camp’s location in an exclusive wildlife concession bordering the game-rich north-eastern Serengeti National Park offers exciting game viewing, as well as the only night game-drives and bush walks in the Serengeti ecosystem.
• Excellent year-round lion, leopard and cheetah viewing
• Great Migration of thousands of zebra and wildebeest (typically in July)
• Huge buffalo and elephant herds
• Soaring eagles, hawks and vultures glide past the hilltop camp
• Rich birdwatching in seasonal marshland
• Five distinct habitats
• Safaris to Lobo Hills and Seronera in central Serengeti

Bush banquets : Enjoy exciting bush breakfasts, sundowners, and romantic bush dinners on the quartzite hills with magnificent views over the northern Serengeti.

Maasai cultural visits : Visits to local Ololosokwan Maasai manyattas offer a rare insight into the ancient customs of tribal life.
