Tarangire National Park is located in northern Tanzania, 120 km southwest of Arusha. The park is named after the Tarangire River that runs through the center of the park from south to northwest and drains into lake Burungi. Tarangire is known for its large herds of elephant and its many baobab trees and displays many of the large African mammals including lion, leopard, African buffalo, and lesser and great kudu. The park also hosts an enormous variety of birds - more than 550 species. The park has the highest concentration of wildlife during the dry season, starting in July and – depending on the short rains, lasting until November to February.
Oliver’s Camp is situated in a remote area of the park, in the middle of Tarangire's unspoilt wilderness zone. The camp is ideally placed to access the yearly migrations of wildlife throughout the ecosystem, and to view the impressive concentrations at waterholes for a 6-7 month season each year.
Being in the wilderness zone allows us the freedom to offer walking excursions close to the camp, as well as longer walking adventures in the endless woodlands and plains habitat that surrounds us. Off road driving in our open vehicles is another privilege enjoyed by us in this area, something that is not readily available in other National Parks in Northern Tanzania.
The Tarangire area has distinct seasons. Oliver’s Camp operates in Tarangire National Park for the period mid June to February. It is in this period that the concentrations of wildlife in the park reach stunning levels as migratory herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo and elephant move inside the park in search of the park’s water sources, the Tarangire river and the Silale swamp, with lions, leopard and other predators following theirs steps closely.

Cold drinks, camp fires and outstanding hosts in such settings combine to make any visit an intimate learning experience for which many a visitor has returned. Our staff are some of the friendliest people you will meet anywhere and always welcome you with a smile and open hearted hospitality. We all aim to make your visit very personal and a totally new experience for you.
The focal point of the camp each evening is the stone fireplace which is close to the library, sitting and dining tents. From here the views are superb. There is no better forum for relaxed conversation and animated reflection on the day’s activities, and no safari is complete without such an experience. As guides some of our best memories are from the fireside, and as guests many of yours will be too.

| Fly camping :
Fly camping is a wonderful way to sleep under the stars and enjoy the pure tranquility and raw excitement of the bush. Ten foot square tents made of heavy duty mosquito mesh ensure that you are close to nature but apart from only bugs.
Fly camping in the wilderness areas of Tarangire national park is a perfect compliment to a longer stay at our Base camp. The freedom of movement, the intimacy of the light camp and the thrill of being so close to nature is the pinnacle of many guests’ safaris. Our fly camp is light enough to move easily and strike quickly, but still retains the everyday luxuries that characterise Oliver’s Camp – hot showers, comfortable bedding and cold drinks served with gourmet food.
Walking :
Oliver’s Camp is the base for a unique possibility: walking inside the magnificent Tarangire National Park! The variety of habitats surrounding the Base Camp include open plains, acacia woodlands, tree lined sand rivers, swamps and challenging hill climbs. The walking opportunities for guests staying at Oliver's Camp range from a gentle stroll near the camp, to a full day out on foot across the Park exploring the recently opened wilderness zone. Walking safaris can be combined with fly camping to give guests the ultimate safari experience: walking into your own private camp – where food and drinks await you - after a day of walking through the beauty of Tarangire National Park. Walking safaris are professionally guided and interpreted, and escorted by a park ranger. Vehicle pick-up and drop off can be arranged. Walkie-talkie radios allow contact with vehicles and camps.
Game drives & photography :
With local knowledge and up to date information on the areas around the Base Camp, the guides of Kearsley's are second to none when it comes to finding the wildlife. The migratory herds of wildebeest, buffalo, zebra and elephant afford us great day-to-day wildlife viewing, and the dry season search for water means that the big cats are never far away. Up to twenty mammal species can be seen on almost every drive. We use open vehicles and enjoy the freedom of off-road driving to access hidden areas and rare wildlife. Few other visitors to this part of the park means long game drives undisturbed by other vehicles, affording our guests private and unique sightings.
