Fundu is on Pemba Island, the sister island to Zanzibar lying across the Pemba Channel to the north. The hotel is situated on a remote and beautiful beach on the south western side of the island and is only accessible by boat.

There are fourteen bungalows, consisting of spacious tents, set under makuti (thatch) roofs on wooden decks and each with a view over the ocean. The rooms are equipped with large double or twin beds, mosquito nets, ceiling and standing fans, and indoor and outdoor seating areas. Each has an ensuite bathroom with fresh hot water shower, toilet and basin. The rooms are connected to the main buildings by sand walkways. Some rooms are situated along the beachfront with the remaining on an elevated position overlooking the ocean. Two of our fourteen accommodations are suites with their own private chill out decks and plunge pools.

We aim to provide the perfect environment for an idyllic vacation, an untroubled haven of tropical sunshine.

The resort offers two bars, a games and television room, an excellent restaurant serving local and international cuisine and a massage and treatment room.

Listed as one of the top diving locations in the world, we also cater for the more energetic holiday-maker with a fully-equipped PADI Resort Diving Centre and a range of watersports including snorkeling and kayaking.

The main means of visiting Pemba Island are by light aircraft charter or schedule flight. There is also a ferry service but this is not always reliable. The only airport is Chake Chake in the centre of the Island, and the main port used by the ferry service is Mkoani in the south-west. After arriving at the airport you will be met and driven to one of two ports, from where you will be brought by private speedboat service to Fundu Lagoon.

Catamaran Sailing Charters : We offer a 30 foot catamaran - Solkatten - with skipper and crew, available for day charters. You can enjoy a leisurely sail discovering the many remote and secluded beaches that Pemba offers while stopping to snorkel the unspoilt reefs and take in a spot of fishing. Trips depart in the morning and a barbecue lunch is provided onboard before returning to Fundu at sunset.

Traditional Dhow Sailing Trips : Alternatively, we also offer our popular sunset sails around the bay, on our traditional 11m wooden sailing dhow. Take a bottle of champagne and listen to the wind in the sails and the water lapping around the dhow as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean, turning the skies into a myriad of colours.

Local Fishing Trips : Take an early morning trip with a guide and a couple of our local fishermen from the village. Sailing off at dawn in a small dhow or outrigger boat, you'll have the chance to catch snapper, parrot fish, mullet or trevelly which our chefs will be happy to grill for you lunch.

Canoe Trips To The Mangroves : The Centre has 4 two man canoes that guests can take down to the pristine mangrove areas around the resort and explore this unspoilt wilderness.

Mangrove Expedition : Fundu Lagoon lies on a peninsular with large expanses of mangrove nearby the resort. The mangrove ecosystem is a precious world abundant in wildlife – our mangroves sustain a wide variety of birdlife living alongside the large numbers of crabs, insect life and fish life which coexist in this environment. You can visit this unexplored wilderness by taking a boat trip down the coast.

Intertidal Nature Walk : On a low tide, walking along the sandflats outside. Fundu Lagoon will reveal an astonishing array of inter-tidal species. This is particularly interesting for bird watchers as the waders, such as herons, ibis and egret, flock to the area to hunt for small invertebrates and fish left behind on the sands and in the shallow sea pools. You can also sometimes see the beautiful fish eagle circling overhead and hear the shrieking of the brown headed parrot in the trees. Other findings include many different shells, crabs, starfish and the peculiar mudskipper,a fish that can skip across the sands on its pectoral fins.

Mesali Island : The jewel of Pemba, Mesali Island is a highlight of everyone’s stay here at Fundu Lagoon. As Pemba’s only marine sanctuary, its protected reefs provide a home to an exceptional range of sea life. Pristine corals attract vast numbers of reef fish and animals coming in from deeper waters you might bump into manta and eagle rays, barracuda and other game fish and reef sharks. For sun-lovers and dry land-lovers, the Mesali beaches are superb and you can go for nature trails with trained wardens through the island including a walk on turtle nesting beaches.

Ngezi Forest : Ngezi forest in the North of Pemba is a beautiful area of natural rain forest populated by large numbers of birdlife, the vervet monkey and full of spectacular trees. We take our guests by speedboat to Weshe from where our driver will continue the journey Northwards through the Pemban countryside, giving the chance to see some local village life on the way. Once at the forest a local guide will help you follow a nature trail. We also include a picnic on one of Pemba’s most stunning stretches of beach.
