On the northernmost peninsula of Zanzibar Island, Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel overlooks a sparkling expanse of iridescent Indian Ocean. The lush gardens drop down onto one of the finest and most unspoilt beaches on the island, which in turn is fringed by a wide and thriving coral reef. Infused with the laid-back, exotic yet ultimately natural spirit of Zanzibar, this is the place to relax and enjoy all that this extraordinary part of the world has to offer.

The hotel is situated in a glorious natural paradise, and our vision is for nature and the hotel to coexist harmoniously, with guests enjoying the beauty of the natural surroundings in luxurious lodge and chalet rooms, and the stunning Ocean Suite, pictured above. An eco-sensitive approach has ensured that the delicate balance of land and sea, flora and fauna is preserved for all to enjoy in the years to come.

The surrounding reefs create one of the most exciting areas to dive and snorkel, and are home to flourishing populations of dolphin, turtles, and countless other marine species. The hotel has an on-site fully equipped PADI Gold Palm 5 Star dive centre and dive adventures are available for all experience levels including beginners, who can be trained to full PADI certification by our resident instructors. A wide range of other watersports is also available.

From the Rest of the World : At present, Gulf Air, Ethiopian Airlines and KLM (together with Kenya Airways) offer international scheduled flights to Zanzibar. Several large carriers fly into Dar es Salaam, which is only a short trip by air or sea from Zanzibar. Amongst them are British Airways, Swiss and Emirates Airlines.

From the Rest of Africa : Air Tanzania, Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines have regular flights to Zanzibar. Dar es Salaam is also served by them, as well as Air Zimbabwe, Egypt Air, Air India, Air Malawi, South African Airways, Royal Swazi Airlines and others.

All 32 rooms are tastefully furnished, with hand-crafted four poster beds and indigenous decor, and all have balconies, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, hair-dryers, electronic safes and en suite facilities with deluxe bathroom amenities.

Mosquito nets over all beds ensure a peaceful night's sleep, with the sound of the ocean rounding off a relaxing day in paradise. Lodge rooms have a garden view and both types of chalet room (superior and superior deluxe) have a sea view, with proximity to the ocean being closer the higher the category. Both chalet categories are fitted with mini-bars.

Superior deluxe chalet rooms also have a CD-player and and other special extras.

The 10 Type A rooms are located behind the sea front rooms in a U shape facing on to the gardens. These are comfortable with en suite bathrooms and a hot water shower.

They have 14 type B rooms, located further away from the beachfront. These are pretty basic, with en suite facilities, but only cold water in their showers. It is very hot in Zanzibar, and often hot water is not a prerequisite, however if you like that little bit of warmth in your water, then the Type A rooms would definitely be better.

The 10 Type C rooms are for backpackers with shared ablution facilities and are very basic.

All rooms have mosquito nets and ceiling fans.

Ocean Suite : For those seeking a truly exclusive hideaway for all or part of their stay, Ras Nungwi’s unique Ocean Suite provides the finest beach accommodation on Zanzibar Island. The enormous detached suite of over 200 square metres is entirely self-contained in verdant gardens, with its own plunge pool and spacious living areas.

Guests in the Ocean Suite enjoy its magnificent roof-terrace and open-air sitting room, perfect for airy siestas or stargazing. Wake to unspoilt views from the immense double bed, of gardens and ocean horizons elegantly framed with billowing muslin drapes. Just beyond the private terrace a path meanders down to the stunning white-sand beach, and dazzling turquoise lagoon.

Room facilities:
Choice of double or single beds
Mosquito nets
Ceiling fans
Hot water facilities in Type A and Sea Front rooms

Activities : Pool, table tennis, darts, board games (including Bau, a Zanzibarian favourite) and a TV room are available to hotel guests. Mountain bikes can be hired to explore the hotel's environs, or you may just want to take long strolls on our unspoilt beach. For those seeking the ultimate in relaxation, let us arrange a massage for you.

Tours and excursions to various places of interest can be organised through the hotel. We highly recommend a guided tour of Zanzibar's historical Stone Town and a visit to the Spice Plantations.

Another worthwhile excursion is to Jozani Forest, home of the rare Kirk's Red Colobus monkey. The forest has an excellent nature trail allowing various routes, depending on how energetic you feel.

Of particular note is the Nungwi Village walking tour which involves an informed look at local village life in Zanzibar's dhow-building capital. The SupaDuka Boutique at Ras Nungwi, decorated by renowned artist Kioko Mwitiki, offers a tasteful range of quality gifts, clothing, unique arts and crafts and essential travel items.
