Ol Doinyo Lengai – Active Volcano that Sprays Unusual Lava in Tanzania
Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Arusha Region, Tanzania. The name means „Mountain of God“ in the Massai language. It is known as one of the strangest volcanoes on Earth: its unique natrocarbonatite lava crystallizes in the air and then sprinkles the slope with thousands of pebbles. It is due to the sodium and potassium carbonate minerals that react to the air and therefore harden quickly.
Volcano has been active frequently in the past few years, including 2015. Nevertheless its activity is being followed by the volcanologists, so it is safe to climb the mountain, which offers a rather challenging adventure. Volcano’s downhill is covered in elephant grass, which gets thinner and thinner on the way up. However, the arduous climbing to the 3188 m (10 459 ft) high mountain is very rewarding as wonderful views open from the summit.
