Thick armored, forte and rare, Rhinos are known to be precious living creatures on earth whose existent is nearly threatened with only about 29,000 remaining despite an expected figure of 500,000. Today, on World Rhino Day, dedicated to these magnificent creatures on Earth, we are sharing amazing facts that will want you show only more love for them. The name Rhino is derived from its most unique organ- the nose horn and there are only 5 species around the world – the Black Rhinoceros, White Rhinoceros, Indian Rhinoceros, Javan Rhinoceros and Sumatran Rhinoceros.
Known to be the second largest mammal on earth, the white rhino weighs nearly 3500 kilograms and the other species up to 1000 kilograms. Despite their heavy size, the brain size of the rhinos is relatively smaller.
Rhinos are essentially plant eaters; feeding on grass, swamps and rainforests. Despite their robust physical structure, these mammals are shy and do not prey on other animals. They can get frightened easily by an animal or even a safe object.

These shy herbivores are solitary animals and enjoy being on their own. They can be rarely spotted together in a ‘crash’ that usually consists of the females and her calves.

The male bulls are known to be territorial and mark their boundaries with their feces to attract a female rhino to breed with. These animals can also attract tick birds also known as Oxpecker that are often spotted on their backs feeding on insects living on their thick skin.
The biggest threat to the rhinos is not predator attacks but ILLEGAL HUNTING that has considerably shrunk their population. The white male rhino is no more however countries like Tanzania continue to succeed in the conservation efforts and the Ngorongoro Crater is now a safe and proud abode of 50 black rhinos that will hopefully grow in numbers.
