Situated on the foothills of Mt Meru at an altitude of almost 1400 m, the cosy bungalows at Meru View Lodge are a perfect starting point for mountain tours taking place on Mt Meru or its neighbouring “big brother” the majestic, snow-capped Kilimanjaro. Meru View Lodge is only a stone’s throw away from Arusha National Park and is ideally located for safaris departing to the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks, as well as other excursion options.
Olpopongi Maasai Village
Shortly before the Kenyian border, between Mt Meru and Kilimanjaro, we reach the wide, open Maasai land. Cattle still play a dominating role in the life of these tall, Nilotic-speaking, semi-pastoral people who wear red, chequered garments (shuka). With a Maasai guide, you will encounter the savannah, learn about medicinal herbal plants, and receive an introduction into their lifestyle and the complex age-set social system.
Usa River Walk
Only a few kilometres away from the Lodge along the main Moshi-Arusha road lay the small but vibrant village Usa River. Market day, which takes place on Thursdays and Sundays, is the best day to visit. Clothes, shoes and a wide variety of other products are sold or auctioned here. Fruits and vegetables from the Wameru home gardens and also those from the coastal region may also be seen on display.
Coffee Walk
In the area around our lodge, some of the best Tanzanian coffee is grown. Enjoy a walk through the private small-scale coffee “shambas” (fields) of the local Wameru people. Get to know many interesting facts about coffee, how it is grown, harvested, proceeded and exported. Learn to make coffee in the traditional Tanzanian style which also includes washing, roasting and grinding the beans.
After a traditional lunch meal at one of the “shambas” you’ll continue walking along several Wameru plantations; if you’re lucky you might see some colobus monkeys or other primates on your way.
Canoeing Lake Duluti
In the vicinity of the small neighbouring village Tengeru, in a forest reserve, there is quiet Lake Duluti which is of volcanic origin. You’ll share a canoe with a guide to discover the lake. A great variety of bird species prevails. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a fish eagle. Monitor lizards live at the lake shores and monkeys inhabit the surrounding woods. After the canoe trip, you’ll have lunch at a small local restaurant.
